The struggles of Americans to secure civil liberties and the betrayal of racial, religious, and political minorities

"Whoever has power has civil liberty," concluded author Leon Whipple when he published this useful historical account in 1927. The author describes betrayal after betrayal—particularly of racial, religious, and political minorities—of the most basic rights for many Americans up to that time. This book serves as a warning that the promise of liberty is meaningful only if liberty is ensured for all people, including those we don't agree with or don't understand.
